THE TERMINUS
Academic Project
Bowling, UK / 2019
Description:
The first and main project of the schoolyear asks to produce a boat recovery centre for PS Iona in Bowling Harbour, located at the entrance to the Forth & Clyde Canal. In past years, when Glasgow was one of the UK marine port centres, this harbour prospered, however, nowadays it is abandoned.
Developing the proposal I was pursuing the goal of the revitalization of the desolated harbour through exploration of the Deconstructivism architectural theory, formulated by Peter Eisenmann. Considering architecture as pure art and introducing the syntax method of model development (the method of usage of formal sign system), he affected the architectural perception by producing proposals, where the shape does not reflect the content of the building and is generated by mathematical transformation of simple geometric shape, the cube. The same approach has been taken to this design development by using an octahedron, as the initial geometric shape for deconstructive transformation, which gives more complex and dynamic forms due to the presence of sharp angles and pitched surfaces.
Making an effort not only to produce the building of a unique shape, that, being a dynamic civic space, can become a way of revitalising the previously abandoned harbour with respect to the existing site context and referencing construction methods to the most notable site features, but also redevelop the harbour landscape, broadening the proposal functions and maximizing visitor experience quality.
